Hello, mothers (and fathers) of Boston!

Here at NEDC we are glad to be working with Boston Moms again in 2022 as an expert and resource on all things architecture and design build across Boston and New England.

Are you thinking of taking on a major home design and/or remodel this year?

You are not alone. The home design and remodeling industry is white hot across the country as parents, professionals, and families assess their lives, pivot accordingly, and redesign and reengineer their homes to meet the unique demands of current-day parenting, education, exercise, creativity, and, well… life.

2021 was a series of curveballs. I have two little ones. I know. I’m living it as well.

Our goal here at NEDC is to inject as much certainty as possible into 2022 and help our clients design and craft dream homes that meet and exceed their expectations — homes serving as platforms allowing them to live and in fact flourish into the future with carefully envisioned convenience, practicality, aesthetics, and sustainable innovation.

We aim to lift spirits with spaces, and we have been doing so across Boston for nearly 20 years. Our creative team of architects, interior designers, and master craftsmen have over 340 years of combined experience. We love what we do and genuinely enjoy helping those we engage with.

1. DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL GOALS FOR YOUR NEW HOME DESIGN REMODEL

These can be broad goals and don’t have to be fully refined up front. We will work with you in the design phase to delineate them exactly.

A few examples could be:

  • “I want a home addition that can properly accommodate two professionals working on and off from home as necessary while accommodating educational and creative/exercise space for my two children.”

Or

  • “I want a master suite that has the detachment, layout, amenities, and healing properties of my favorite eco spa; a kitchen that doesn’t drive me insane with its ‘layout;’ and an infusion of natural light and sustainable finishes throughout my home.”

Or

  • “I want my home to be a passive house (cutting-edge in sustainable design technology) with an aesthetic natural interior environment and a fresh air flow that is significantly healthier than a standard home.”

These are highly personal generally, and there could be many varieties. These are simply a few examples.

Sit down with a good cup of coffee (or tea) and write down your broad goals for your dream home, as above. There may be one or many. Keep it informal and just WRITE. Let it all out. We can help you evolve and refine.

2. ELECT SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AS A PRIORITY

We aim to design with sustainability at the forefront of our creative endeavors. An affinity for our environment can be seen in our designs, and we work to educate our clients on the benefits of sustainable design — both for the environment, but also for their own health.

The passive house movement is here to be embraced by those seeking the gold standard in modern day eco-homes.

“Passive house (German: passivhaus) is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, which reduces the building’s ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling.” (Wikipedia)

NEDC Home under construction

NEDC is currently mid-construction on a custom passive house retrofit, which we have designed and are now remodeling for a client in Somerville, MA. This is a two-story conversion into a custom single-family home to passive house standards.

As a passive house this beautiful home will have the following key advantages:

  • It’s designed to require no heating or air conditioning unit. (The home heats and cools itself passively through environmental heating and cooling as well as its special insulation system.)
  • A carbon footprint of nearly zero.
  • Markedly healthier interior air quality.

You can see more on this exciting passive house project here and here.

3. REVIEW AND USE OUR NEW 2022 COST GUIDE!

This is our 2022 guide for design inspiration and tangible straight talk on costing associated with home design and remodeling in Boston — based on actual Boston projects.

Some firms hedge on the subject of costing — not us. We embrace transparency and financial straight talk so clients have full understanding and control from the very outset of the design process.

We’ve recently updated our cost guide to assist in both inspiration and practical knowledge of home design and remodeling costs for each aspect of a home — from home offices to master suites and custom kitchens. I’ve provided this for use below.

4. EDUCATE YOURSELF ON WHY ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN BUILD — AND REACH OUT WITH YOUR CREATIVE VISION FOR YOUR HOME!

Some of the client benefits of architectural design build are these:

  • SAVE TIME
  • SAVE MONEY
  • ELIMINATE STRESS
  • ACTUALLY HAVE… FUN! AND ENJOY THE CREATIVE PROCESS!

So… what is architectural design build?

Architectural design build is a home design and creation model that stresses single-source accountability with the creative design, planning, and remodel executed start to finish by one single entity or firm. Here at New England Design & Construction we specialize in architectural design build with a focus on sustainable high-end and luxury home remodels for clients across Boston.

Architectural design build is patterned on the time-honored concept of the master builder of old whereby a single individual or team was responsible for all design and building — from beginning to end in the creative process. This has been the fundamental role of an architect for thousands of years prior to its relegation to a mere designer in the mid 1800s.

Architectural design-build is turned to by professionals, families, and individuals as the cutting edge of efficiency, aesthetics, practicality, and accountability when it comes to the design and remodel of a home. This approach packages architectural and interior design services with artisan-level building and remodeling services. This natural synthesis makes for a simple, efficient, and accountable creative process followed by a streamlined and responsible execution process, reducing cost, time of execution, and client stress throughout. In the design-build modality, the client is dealing solely with one fully accountable firm. This is a beautiful thing.

New England Design and Construction does architectural design build with a specialty focus on sustainable luxury homes across Boston.

I’m passionate about the subject and the positive impact such an innovative revolution can potentially have on our earth.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or thoughts. We’d love to help!

Love,
