Being born and raised in New England (I’ve never lived anywhere else!), I have experienced some of the brutal winters this area has to offer. Add kids to the mix, and snow storms can be more than a bit of a test. Use our guide to make sure you’re ready for our next nor’easter.

Food

  • Extra bottled water — you can never have enough! This is especially essential if you live in a home with well water. Plan on at least one gallon per person per day if there is a power outage.
  • Shelf-stable milk.
  • Foods that take little to no prep: PB&J, dry cereal, cans of soup, SpaghettiOs, etc.
  • Extra baby formula and shelf-stable baby food. You won’t be able to open the fridge/freezer for homemade baby food and/or frozen breastmilk. Plan accordingly.
  • Instant coffee. I am a coffee drinker and I. need. coffee. It’s better than nothing!

Electronics

  • Make sure all phones, iPads, and electronics are charged prior to a storm.
  • A battery operated radio — it’s amazing how a little music can liven up a power outage!
  • Flashlights, battery-powered lanterns, and extra batteries. Candles are probably not the best bet with littles running around.
  • A portable charger for phones and electronics. They are super cheap and can be a lifesaver in a pinch.

Fun things

  • Extra blankets, sleeping bags, etc. These can also be used to make forts!
  • Stock up on art supplies, books, board games, etc. Nothing brings a family close like turning off electronics and being huddled together!

Odds and ends

  • First aid kit.
  • Kitty litter or sand. It can be used instead of ice melt for a greener way to make walkways walkable.
  • Enough medication to last a few days. Always prep before the storm if you have loved ones on prescription medications — you never know when you’ll be able to run out for a refill!
  • Plenty of diapers and wipes. You may not be able to run out to the store until days after the storm clears.
  • Make sure the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have been changed recently. You don’t want to have to change batteries without any power or run into any problems!
