When my stepkids turned 12 we took them and a group of their friends to a trampoline park. My son Jackson was barely 1, and he spent the afternoon toddling around the small bounce area for kids his size. Fast forward a few years, and he recently attended a birthday party there with his friends. It felt surreal that 5-year-olds could go around this park basically on their own and that we’ve officially entered the birthday party era.
That day, I realized my son has entered a new phase of life — he’s going to be making real memories and experiencing exciting things he’ll remember for a long time! I don’t want to jump too far ahead too quickly (although I look forward to the day I no longer have to pay for daycare), but there are a few “milestone” activities I can’t wait to experience with my kid.
Bowling
I haven’t even been in a bowling alley since before Jackson could walk. But now that he’ll be able to understand the game, I’m so excited to watch him try candlepin and regular bowling.
Going to the movie theater
I know, I know, lots of kids experience movies in a theater before they’re 5. But up until recently, Jackson hasn’t been able to make it through a movie night at home without talking or asking questions. There’s no rush, of course. But I remember taking my now-21-year-old cousin to her first movie when she was young, and it was a memorable experience for sure.
Going to Disney
Growing up in Florida, I took Disney for granted. But having married into a big Disney family, I can’t wait to take Jackson to see Mickey for the first time and meet his favorite characters and Marvel heroes.
Trying skiing
I don’t ski (yet), but it’s a pastime my husband and stepkids love doing together. I’m looking forward to seeing how Jackson likes it!
Catching a game
Jackson is on the path to be a sports fan like his father and brother. Being in the Boston area, he’s going to get to experience fans like no other.
Going to kindergarten
It’s coming. I don’t want to make time go any faster, but I can’t wait to see him off for his first day of school and see what the new chapter brings for him!
Sleepovers
Once Jackson is old enough to be away from family for a night, it’ll be so fun to watch him experience a sleepover with friends! (And I can’t wait to host a sleepover!)
