There are so many things to look forward to each Thanksgiving. We enjoy time with family or traveling to see distant relatives. Some are excited to start their day by watching the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The vast majority can’t wait to indulge in a meal with the staples you may only partake of on a yearly basis. For others, it’s all about the pie, from pumpkin to sweet potato (my favorite!) to pecan.
But my Thanksgiving favorite? I can’t wait to run! Yes, I am one of those people who loves to start my Thanksgiving Day with a good ol’ turkey trot.
For one, it’s a family event. Many races have kid fun runs as part of the race festivities. As a mom of a toddler, I love strapping my daughter into the stroller and taking her along on the run. She loves it too!
Second, I have friends who basically are family to me, so this is a way we get to celebrate a portion of the day together. And it’s fun to run in a crowd with other people who are crazy enough to enjoy sprinting in the cold air of late November.
Finally, there’s no rule stating you HAVE to run. There are tons of families who walk the entire race with their turkey hats on — having just as much fun as everyone else.
A lot of our holiday traditions were canceled last year — thanks, 2020 — but the turkey trot is making a comeback in 2021. If you’re like me and need your turkey trot fix, here’s a list of races set to return this year to the Boston area. All races are scheduled for the morning of Thursday, November 25, except where noted.
Happy turkey trotting!
